Luneville French compote dish

A Luneville French compote dish from the late 19th century, produced by the well-known French faience manufactory of Luneville, located in the Lorraine region of France. The maker's mark is clearly visible on the base, printed in dark blue in the characteristic crosshatched script style associated with the Luneville pottery works, active from 1731 and particularly prolific during the Aesthetic Movement period of the 1870s to 1890s.

The piece is earthenware, glazed in a warm off-white cream ground. The decoration is transfer-printed in slate blue-grey and depicts a naturalistic composition of birds perched among flowering branches, trailing botanical sprigs, and dragonflies in flight -- motifs strongly influenced by the Japonisme aesthetic that was fashionable in French ceramics during this period. The same floral sprig motif continues on the pedestal base. The underside of the dish also carries smaller botanical transfer prints. The glaze is glossy throughout. Some minor age-related marks and light wear consistent with age and use are present, as expected for a piece of this era.

The compote measures approximately 22cm wide x 11cm tall / 8.7" wide x 4.3" tall as stated by the seller. The pedestal foot has a flared circular base, and the shallow dish sits wide and flat on top, giving the form a classic tazza profile.

A Luneville French compote dish of this type works well as a display piece on a mantelpiece, sideboard or dining table. It appeals to collectors of French faience, Japonisme-influenced ceramics, and 19th-century transferware.
